Less than 24 hours earlier, I had listened to a fresh episode of the ChessDojo podcast titled Should I Play Up?
Of course, there is no single correct answer that fits everyone, but the podcast offers several good reflections on the topic. Perhaps you or your child are facing the same decision?
Over the years, I have had many conversations about this with my students, and my advice has varied. Today, I said something along these lines:
If you choose to play in a higher section, make sure it is worth it. You do not automatically become a stronger chess player simply by facing stronger opposition. If you decide to play up, do it properly.
Good preparation involves more than opening variations, and, most importantly, analyze your games thoroughly afterwards, with both words and variations.
That is often where the real improvement happens.
